WHAT: “Restore Red Hook Art Show”

WHY: Help revive Red Hook businesses still recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

 

On Sunday, December 16 from 2pm to 8pm The Restore Red Hook Art Show will bring together some of the most prominent names in the tattoo industry to Kidd Studios (133 Imlay St.) for a benefit to help local Red Hook businesses affected by Hurricane Sandy. In addition to a silent auction, the benefit will offer on-site tattoos, live music, and a cash bar.

 

The benefit is made possible by Ethan Morgan of Rivington Tattoo (175 Rivington Street), himself a well known tattoo artist who lives in the heart of Red Hook.  Ethan’s neighborhood was devastated by severe flooding and power outages after Hurricane Sandy struck, October 29.  (Ethan himself was without heat, hot water and power for 19 days.)  While some businesses are starting to buzz back to life, many are still recovering.

 

“This is my neighborhood, and these are people I rub elbows with everyday,” Ethan said.  “I’m just happy I can give something back.”  All proceeds from the auction will go directly to restoreredhook.org.

The event will include four tattoo stations offering original Hurricane Sandy / Red Hook-inspired designs created specially for the event by Rivington Tattoo.  Prices start at $50. The silent auction will offer prints (starting at $20) and original artwork (starting at $50) from artists across the U.S. and as far away as Europe.  There will also be a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted tattoo machine with a retail value of $500.

RESTORE REDHOOK TATTOO BENEFIT

Hey Everyone!

We are having a benefit for businesses affected by Hurricane Sandy. Ethan lives in Red Hook, and was himself without heat, hot water, and power for 19 days. Red Hook is a bit off the beaten track and only has bus service there, so small businesses are very important for the neighborhood.

We are doing a tattoo benefit/art show on 12/16. Although it is short notice, we'd appreciate it if you could put it in your calendar...its going to be a great event for a great cause! We're still working on finding a space but more information will be forthcoming as soon as we work out the details.

So far the list of participating artists includes: Robert Hernandez, Mike Pike, Jojo Akermann, Dan Marshall, Lior Cifer, Damon Conklin, Bill Canales, Robert Atkinson, Betty Rose, Shelby Cobra, Hek1, Sweety, Zoe Bean, Lara Scotton, Rob Nunez, Alex Sherker, Murran Billi, Mike Godfrey, and Mike Bee. After almost a year of operation Rivington Tattoo is expanding.

At this point we are looking to get one more artist as well as guest artists and will be accepting portfolios now.
In order to apply you must have the following qualifications:

-responsible and dedicated full time tattoo artist with the confidence to make it in NYC.
-5-6 years experience of professional tattooing in a professional studio.
- Custom artist with clientele around the tri-state area.
-at least a couple of past references contacts. ( past employers, artists you worked with, etc.)
-able to commit for a long term position.
-able to get certified and work in NYC as well as travel to conventions in the US and abroad.

We are looking to put together a team that can work well together and create a productive artistic environment. The goal is to have our little corner of Vahalla that feels like home for us and our clients.

More tattoo tips

1. If you are getting a tattoo on your hip a leotard is not a good clothing choice, unless you like being naked in front of strangers.
2. An MP3 player or tablet is good for distraction as long as we can't hear what you are listening to. We want you to be comfortable it helps you sit longer and makes the time fly by. A game system however is a bad choice, tattooing a button masher is not good for anyone involved.

some thing you should know before getting tattooed

1. Don't bring your children with you, they are a distraction to you and the tattoo artist.
2. Eat before and get plenty of rest before your appointment and hydrate with water not booze.
3. The shop bathroom is for peeing only, don't ruin everyones day here. Go home or go to McDonalds.
